Dr. Dr. h.c. Henri B. Meier, Member

Founder & Chairman of HBMBioVentures AG and HBMPartner AG

Dr. Meier is Founder & Chairman of HBM BioVentures AG, one of the leading healthcare venture capital firms in Europe.

He has been Chief Financial Office and a member of the Roche Group Executive Committee from 1986 until the end of 2000, and a member of the Board of Directors from 1994-2004. During his years in this position, he has been instrumental in building Roche into one of the most valuable Pharma companies. Among many things, he was instrumental in engineering successful major transactions such as the acquisition of the majority interest in Genentech, and the acquisition of Syntex and Boehringer Mannheim. He is the architect of Roche’s modern financial structure and accounting system, and gained international recognition through numerous large and innovative financial transactions. Dr. Meier was the co-initiator of several venture capital companies such as Rovent and Innoventure, and also organized several spin-offs, the latest being Basilea Pharmaceutica AG, a spin-off from Roche.

Before joining Roche, he was for several years a member of the Executive Committee of the Handelsbank National Westminster, responsible for the development of the investment banking operations. Before that, he was a member of the Executive Committee of Motor Columbus Ing. From 1965 to 1973 he served as analyst and Investment Officer at IFC and the World Bank in Washington, where he became one of the youngest Division Heads.

Dr. Meier holds a Master of Economics and Business Administration and a Ph. D. from the St. Gallen School of Economics. In 1999, he received a Honorary Ph. D. from the University of Basel.
