Prof. Dr. Dr. Ernst-Günter Afting, Member

Former President of the German National Research Center for Environment and Health (GSF)

Professor Afting is an independent advisor for healthcare companies and was from 1995 until his retirement in 2006 president of the National Research Center for Environment and Health (GSF) in Munich, one of the biggest national research centers in Germany.

Between 1993 and 1995 he was president and CEO of Roussel Uclaf in Paris, a subsidiary of Hoechst AG, which is a 15,000 person pharmaceutical company focused on anti-infective and cardiovascular drugs as well as steroids. Professor Afting had previously held various positions with Hoechst AG since 1984. Among others, he was Member of the Board of Behring-Werke, Marburg from 1984 to 1989; Head of world-wide Pharma Research of Hoechst AG from 1989 to 1991; Head of the Pharmaceutical Division of the Hoechst Group and Chairman of the Divisional Pharmaceutical Board from 1991 to 1993.

He was a member of the Advisory Committee on Science and Technology to the German Chancellor Kohl from 1996 to 1997 and has been a Member of the Natl. Advisory Committee on Health to the State Secretaries of Science / Technology and Health since 1996. Prof. Afting serves on several supervisory boards of entrepreneurial biotechnology companies: e.g. InterCell, Enanta Pharmaceuticals, Sequenom.

Professor Afting holds degrees in medicine and chemistry ( M.D. Ph.D. ) and is a member of the medical faculty at the University of Goettingen since 1985.
